[ inaudible ] >> it's not that i want to punish your success. i want to make sure everybody behind you has a chance. i think when you spread wealth around it's good. >> a simple theory. we have to admit it's one that speaks to our rugged individualism. and our healthy skepticism of too much government. here is the problem. it doesn't work. it has never worked. >> the private sector is doing fine. >> if you have been successful, you didn't get there on your own. you didn't get there on your own. if you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. if you've got a business, you didn't build that. somebody else made that happen. you're not on your own. we're in this together. >> dana: welcome back to the inappropriateness of "the five" at the table, because we started talking before you all were back. now that you're back we're

start having a discussion. kimberly, i don't know if you are the one that started it. this goes to the age-old question the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. when you look at that in totality, you look at the philosophical underpins of what this election is about. what do you glean from that monologue? >> kimberly: i'm against anyone against rugged individualism. it works for me. why do you want to disparage americans? saying every morning they wake, they're inadequate and unable to have vision and creativity and not be on the government dependence? that is really contrary to all the founding principles of this country. that is not what we stand for. it's a disconnect. it shows that they don't -- he doesn't have a clue of what we're about and telegraphs where he is going to continue to take the country if he is rewarded inappropriately. >> dana: that is the question. eric, if you have a country that you can look at it 50/50,

republicans, democrats and then you have take away, maybe 9 to 12% gallup says people undecided at this point, do you think what they think about who they would want to vote for, mitt romney or president obama, that they look at that and say you know what? i don't know if we can do it another four years? >> eric: first, i think the country is center right. not 50/50. my opinion. my feeling, center right. when we hear things like the monnage to we put together -- montage we put together, president obama's politics are like saul alinsky. community organizing. economics are along the line of karl marx, communist manifesto. redistribution, collectism. foreign policy comes from bill ayers where exceptionalism is more a disease than something to strive for or a goal. we hear that and center right hears that and they go well, no, no more, not four more years.

straight. he is a marxist. bill ayers is the one, not hillary clinton, who is running our foreign policy. >> eric: his politics are alinsky-like. his foreign policy is ayers like. >> bob: that is crazy. >> eric: i thought you weren't going to talk. >> dana: let's get kimberly in here and talk about the politics of it. following a lot of the conservative commentators, on twitter today, they loved romney's reaction. i saw a couple of them say, i was holding my breath until the moment. he finally, that is what i'm looking for in the candidate. >> kimberly: i love it. i thought the same thing. seeing him out there moving around with the crowd. sleeves rolled up, muscling up, talking about americans what we can do collectively. that is an idea of hope, real hope. believing in this country. i'm so sick of the putdown, saying you can't do it. yes, we can. i want somebody that can do it better than me. you know what i'm saying? i do. >> bob: rugged individuals, not collectivism? >> kimberly: he said

collectively as american what is we can do in the free market with capitalism, with an opportunity to get out there and make something of yourself. that's why everyone else wants to come to the country, bob. it's the greatest. let's not ruin it. >> bob: did you get one thing out of what romney said about inkling of a policy about anything? >> kimberly: it's a philosophy. >> eric: yesterday in the speech he delivered he delivered four points. energy, education. regulation and tax reform. it was fantastic. >> bob: say what he would do about it? >> eric: he did. one-by-one, 40-minute speech and took it down the line. fantastic. >> dana: one thing happening when the democrats look how to defend president obama on this. rightly so. i don't think they realize how bad it would be. one of the jobs on the campaign a younger person might have is to watch everything that the president says. constantly be watching to make sure they are covering everything. it wonder if when he said that anybody went -- [ georgiaps ] that's not a very good idea! >> greg: i don't think so. i go back, and i believe

that -- i don't think president obama is an evil person. and i don't think romney is a vacuous evil person. he doesn't think he is wrong. the interesting thing to me is what about the people that support him in his endeavors? the celebrity, his celebrity fans? there has never been a hollywood movie where the hero credits a government hand-out. everything in hollywood is about rugged individualism. the heros are always like rocky. they're not like a welfare recipient. why isn't clooney taking those movies? >> eric: you are saying he believes in what he is saying, it's not bad an it's not -- >> greg: no. i'm saying we are coming down to a fairly substantial debate about ideology. >> kimberly: right. >> greg: that is why bob should be participating in this. >> bob: can i just -- >> kimberly: yes. >> bob: i know we don't have

ever happened to mitt romney is friday's speech where president obama went there with the business, antibusiness speech. what he did, he took taxes off the table, took bain capital off the table. took ncaap off the table and brought the focus back to business, the economy. >> bob: the entire weekend was dominated by republicans asking him to return his tax returns. not about what he said about what obama said about business. about his tax return. haley barbour on down. >> greg: good point, but also it speaks to the media which tends to ignore these stories, which i think is what obama said. a bigger story. >> kimberly: they are not going to be there now. >> bob: a bigger story -- >> greg: two different sides, bob. of course you think the tax returns are a bigger deal. i happen to think obama's philosophy is a bigger deal. >> kimberly: now it's been exposed. he let the mask slip. now you hear it. he can try to walk it back and change it, clarify his comments but they're out there and they'll be used. >> bob: he has been exposed

dependency? >> dana: well, if i'm them, i'm trying to explain from their position, which okay, play this role for a second. i say look, the states asked for the flexibility. we're just trying to be helpful. trying to make sure that people get what they need. this wasn't a suggestion. these came from the governor. they're just doing what the governors want. the only problem with that is bill clinton, president bill clinton hangs his hat on good work that welfare reform did. actually had an impact. poverty went down. people livelihood went up. their overall general well-being improved. then all of a sudden for a white house that does almost everything as a rose garden ceremony, this big major change gets done in a letter to the h.h.s. the only reason we know about it, some people at h.h.s. called over to policy folks that worked on the reform in 1996 and said i think we have a problem here. >> greg: he hung his hat on two things. >> dana: i didn't want to go there. >> eric: in 2005, those

activities were not suitable to be defined as work. pulled off the list. then president obama with a sweep of the pen, kathleen sebelius says that is work. >> bob: could i take your hyperbole and say you said, "gut the welfare reform." that is crazy. you get crazier in every announcement you make. as dana pointed out, you around the table always want to say they can do what they want. this comes from the state. huckabee is not being honest here, frankly. >> eric: he helped work on it. >> bob: the massage he is talking about were people who had disability, were going for job interviews who were trying to get themselveses in a position to walk to a job training, to a job application. all the rest of this stuff, you can make these things out and typical for you, you take little things out and dramatize things and that is a bunch of bull.

>> kimberly: oh, yeah. >> bob: you know who asked for that? which state? alabama. there is a good solid democratic state, isn't it? >> eric: talk about what president obama has done. he is expanding the base of people on food stamps and expanding the base. but what he is doing he is lowering the requirement. so in other words, if this was a requirement again on food stamps he has lowered it down so more people are on food stamps. >> kimberly: become dependent. dependency nation now. >> eric: to people stay on the programs? >> kimberly: we are wearing a gigantic debands undergarment. we're america. we can't go to the bathrooms for ourselves. it's a joke. i don't know what is going on. i hope people realize there is a definitive choice of what to do. now we know. no more joke or mystique. let's put him in. he might attract business. he has not. you know people in your party are petty sick of him as

well -- pretty sick of him as well. >> bob: you don't think it's a joke for people who want to eat and feed their family? >> kimberly: i don't. i believe in them and i believe they want to help themselves and help their families. >> eric: if they can't get a job, why not get food stamps? >> dana: there are democrats including some that have said that the welfare program as designed before 1996, was not as helpful. with all good intentions, not working. i think congress deserves the courtesy of looking at this before they do it without tal talking. >> bob: a lot of programs i supported we now look on and say we made a mistake, bred generation of dependent people but we made strides in changing that. >> eric: you have but this goes the other way. >> bob: this is something, you are a state rights guy and all of a sudden you're a federalist. >> eric: i'm no federalist. go ahead. >> greg: these type of program might have created or
